When the man who cost him his job offers Jack Teagarden a beachside house-sitting assignment, he latches on to it like a man overboard. For a child of Silicon Valley, the counterculture freakiness of Santa Cruz is hard to deal with, until Jack's life coach takes him to an all-night drumming party. Under the spell of a thunderous stream of percussion, a pigeon-raising witch named Audrey LaBrea and a tragically unmarked plate of brownies, Jack wakes up with grass stains all over his body and rumors that he initiated a naked light-saber battle. So what's harder, fighting the freaks? Or realizing that you are one?

The Monkey Tribe J Vaughn Michael J Vaughn Books

The Monkey Tribe is one of those books that I can open to any page and enjoy the read. There are passages of such sublime prose that the plot is almost beside the point, though I certainly wanted to know what would happen to the hero -- a conventional accountant who lives life by the numbers (literally and figuratively) until he becomes jobless. He spends a few months at a beach town, hangs with a bunch of Burning Man-types, and is a kind of wide-eyed Alice in a sort of free-spirited Wonderland. Vaughn dances with words, twirling and spinning them (never cajoling) into sparkling delights. The Monkey Tribe is smart and funny as hell.

The Monkey Tribe J Vaughn Michael J Vaughn Books Reviews

A marvelous romp through yet another California subculture. An inspiring story of rejuvenation, renewal, and random breat grabbing. Vaughn's contagious exuberance for life comes through in his fine literary depictions of everything from opera arias to Peruvian coffees. The book also features the best description of being stoned in English prose. I felt like I was high, and I haven't touched the stuff for years. Bravo!
Michael J. Vaughn has a way with words. I first stumbled upon his writing in Columbus, Ohio where I picked up an autographed copy of "Gabriella's Voice." Michael read my review of "Gabriella" on and we struck up an unconventional friendship. Over the years, Michael has sent me books, CDs, and letters, and I've reciprocated with various recordings of mine. The latest book that Michael sent to me was "The Monkey Tribe" and I can truly say that it did not disappoint.
"The Monkey Tribe" is about finding yourself. It is about knowing who you are in your soul and mind, and not just living out your identity through your job. It is that deeply thought provoking - however, it is also a very accessible book that delves into all of the things that tie human relationships together money, love, sex, drugs, ideals, music, and so much more.
The book follows the path of Jack Teagarden - an out of work accountant who was screwed over by Thompson Flores, his higher-up during the Enron debacle. Jack is given an opportunity to house-sit for Flores and takes him up on the offer. The house is in Santa Cruz, far removed from the "numbers" of Silicon Valley. Jack decides that he needs to work on his resume and hires Ben, a life coach. Ben does not serve as a resume builder, but rather someone who embraces life to the fullest, in the quintessential essence of "carpe diem." What ensues is a truly remarkable journey through a man's attempt to let go and have life come to him. Through the book, Jack discovers talents, relationships, lust, love, rhythm, and what is really important in life.
As I mentioned, Michael J. Vaughn has a way with words. He writes far more eloquently than I could ever dream to do in this book review. His works are interesting, intellectual, thought-provoking, motivating, and above all, really fun to read. If you have not yet read a book by Michael J. Vaughn, you must. I truly believe that Michael is one of the great "undiscovered" American writers of the current generation. His works are able to reach people on a basic level, while maintaining a fluid and appealing style that can rival any of the "greats." He does not dumb his books down to the masses, but he does relate to the common man - which I find incredibly difficult to find in most current publications. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to absolutely anyone hoping to find a new gem to put on his or her bookshelf.
I enjoy this author very much. Hisis writing makes me smile, makes me weep a little, makes me want to travel... love it
With an 'in your face' opener this novel kept me intrigued throughout and satisfied my curiosity. I really enjoyed the main characters realization of what really matters in life. Well done, easy read.
This is a "monkey masterpiece", and I would know because I am actually one of the characters in this book, with an alias. Michael J. Vaughn has done such a wonderful job of splicing together different aspects of real events and people, and adding his own fictional slant to create an exciting and life-transforming adventure. I was especially impressed with how Michael made the drumming experience "come to life" on the page with his exceptional prose. I would recommend this book to anyone who is searcing for a more meaningful existence through creative connection to the universe.
